Questions About Veneers
As a dentist, I receive many questions from patients looking to improve the appearance of their teeth and their smile. I receive inquiries about Lumineers and how they compare to traditional porcelain veneers.
Porcelain veneers, including Lumineers, are thin shells of porcelain that a dental lab crafts using a plaster cast of the patient’s mouth and is bonded over the front side of the teeth.
Historically, porcelain veneers are .4 to .8 mm thick which is about the thickness of a credit card. This thickness allows the veneer to look lifelike. However, if the veneer is bonded to an unprepared tooth, the tooth will look over-contoured and cause potential problems for the patient. With porcelain veneers, tooth preparation is necessary to maintain dental function and prohibit dental health problems.
There is some concern that the absence of tooth preparation with Lumineers result in an over-contoured tooth. While a patient might not initially notice this defect, it could be problematic over time. For example, over-contoured teeth are harder to keep clean. If a tooth can’t be kept plaque-free, then gum disease and tooth decay can develop.
